Chapel Down wins two Platinum Medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020

For the second year running we are delighted to have been awarded 2 Platinum medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Out of 16,518 wines judged from 56 countries, just 178 from 24 countries were awarded a Platinum medal. First deemed ‘Gold’ in the first weeks of judging, these wines were re-tasted by panels made up of Regional and Co-Chairs, awarding Platinum medals to the best wines.

Requiring a minimum of 97 points, this year’s Platinum medals make up just 1.08% of all wines tasted at the awards. England was awarded 3 Platinum medals and 2 out of 3 were for Chapel Down Wines. Below Head Winemaker, Josh Donaghay-Spire explains why these particular wines are so special, plus we are pleased to share the judges’ comments for each wine.

Chapel Down Three Graces 2015
Awarded Platinum Medal
“This is a classic traditional method blend to see how the English climate and soil types can show through in this style which is done so well in the Champagne region. This is a multi-site wine so shows how a blend can be better than the sum of its parts. Having small amounts of reserve wine from ‘09, ‘10, ‘11 and ‘13 also helps add layers of complexity.”
Josh Donaghay-Spire, Head Winemaker

“Bold and opulent, with a plush nose of cinnamon-coated baked apples, spun sugar, oats and custard, then a soft yet crisp palate revealing layers of intense apricot, red apple, nuts and toast. Still retains plenty of age-worthy freshness.”

Kit’s Coty Coeur de Cuvée 2014
Awarded Platinum Medal
“From the best fraction of juice of the best block on our best vineyard this wine attempts to see how good English Sparkling wine can be. The careful work done in the vineyard and at the press gives the elegance and poise whereas the wild fermentation in old oak brings weight and texture which, when balanced together can be quite special.”
Josh Donaghay-Spire, Head Winemaker

“Fantastically complex, with a nose laden with cinnamon, brioche, apple blossom, red apples, butter and white mushrooms. Excellent fruit concentration on a powerful palate, which is long, fresh and rich despite the Extra Brut style.”

All in all a fantastic array of medals from one of the world’s most prestigious International wine competitions which highlights the consistent and exceptional quality of our wines.
